Recovering to Good Health

It’s sad but true: there is a stigma attached to mental health. Especially for men.

What would you’re road to good health look like if this weren’t the case? What could you overcome if you reached out for help?

Read my friend Josh Bird’s excellent article on mental health and fitness for men. Check out his shout-out to me too!

Sunnyday!!

You already know I live Sundays. But today is a particularly beautiful, sunny day in RI.

If I have to spend some of it inside doing work, then a green juice is the best compromise.

But it hardly feels like work when I’m putting some finishing touches on my upcoming seminar Build Your Best Self!

I’m so excited to share all these tools and strategies to build the life you really want!

How will you spend your Sunnyday? Share with us!

How your FEAR won’t let you Win!

We all use information from past experiences, our emotions, and needs to make decisions and take action. Our decisions are usually made based on fear or love. But we don’t like to call it fear (because that would be embarrassing!). Instead, we feel self-doubt, frustration, anger, jealousy.

But wouldn’t it be nice to act from a place of love? Real, sustainable change can only happen when we change our motivation to act from fear to love.

How has fear stopped you from taking action towards your goals? When did you regret doing something out of fear?

If you’ve already made this change, how are you acting out of love now? Share your story below to inspire others!

Find me at Crossfit Providence

I’m so proud to be part of this amazing group of people! When I first joined Crossfit Providence, I had the same fears everyone does – “I can’t do this”, “these people are intimidating”, and “I will never be as good as them.” But these thoughts are so self-limiting!

That’s why I’ve become part of the staff – gradually, step by step, I’ve made huge gains in my strength, fitness, and overall wellbeing. I know you can have those gains too!

If you see me in the gym, are interested in making specific goals for yourself, or want to get rid of that voice that says “I can’t”, stop me and say hello. Or contact me through this website.

You can make huge changes in your life. You can build a better version of yourself. Ask me how!

Making Space for Stillness

Image

Meditation, presence, and quieting the mind have all been central themes in my work and personal life lately.

There seems to be this franticness that a lot of people are carrying around with them. A franticness that they need to figure out something big– like a career path or finding a partner. And the franticness serves to speed up the process because it must happen very soon or else…..

They might die. Their life will be over. They will never the thing they really want in life.

This all sounds really dire and tragic, right? But is it true or real? Will you really die if your career path doesn’t look as planned? Will your life be over if you don’t find a partner before age 35? Is life really not worth living if you don’t have the bank account you thought you would by now?

Picture spinning a top (the toy). Imagine that with each spin, we dive further and further into our own head and thoughts about how life should be, the things we should have, and what you need in order to be happy. And with each spin, you are fed more and more marketing about what society tells you that you should want and need.

How would you get out of this situation and stop the spinning?

This place is bred from scarcity and fear. When we feel we don’t have enough or are afraid, we are much more susceptible to messaging from the outside world and trust that more than ourselves. You have to disavow scarcity and fear within yourself to overcome the spinning.

How do I do that?

Before you can replace the scarcity and fear with something that actually serves you, you must first create the space for the inspiration and exploration of something new. The space will first be filled with stillness- a quieted mind, free from judgment and franticness. In the stillness you will find new ideas, feelings, and sensations coming up for you. Look, listen, and feel those things for all they can offer you.

Find the stillness through meditation, yoga, prayer, singing, dancing or any other way that serves you.

Share your practice below to inspire others 🙂

Super Saturday

Image

This Saturday did not turn out like I wanted it to- and I mean that in a good way!

Ever have those days when you prepare the night beforehand to wake up early, be super productive, eat cleanly, and put some check marks on that to-do list?

Yup, that was my Friday night. Everything was going to go smoothly on Saturday.

Yeah right! Fast forward to this morning- Slept in, casually made breakfast, went shopping, cooked a big lunch.

At 4pm I looked at my to-do list, disappointed that I had failed at my “productive day”.

This was my window of opportunity– either see today as a failure or enjoy all the down time I had in the morning and make the most of the evening ahead.

Right away I grabbed my yoga mat and headed out the door. At the front of the yoga class sat Ganesha- remover of obstacles (see pic above). I had been to this class several times, and never really noticed it before. But today, I kept Ganesha in my mind and intentions throughout the class.

I thought about this: so often we are our own worst enemies– our own obstacles to happiness and success. We’re overwhelmed by to-do lists, distracted by all of our demands, and find ourselves spinning in a world we don’t recognize. This definitely does not lead to feelings of success and happiness at the end of the day.

When we slow down and ask ourselves what we really want or need, the next step often presents itself. For me, it was yoga. Allowing myself to forsake my to-do list and indulge in some self care brought me greater happiness immediately!

And from there, my indulgences just flowed…and eventually led to baking cookies!

At the end of the day, my to-do list has no check marks, I didn’t eat kale, and I wasn’t too productive. So what?! Sometimes you need to feed the soul and re-evaluate what a successful and productive day really means. Choosing happiness and rejecting negativity can make all the difference- no matter what you did today!

What window of opportunity did you have to choose the outcome of your day? What would you do differently next time? Share below!

Happy Sunday!

Image

Happy Soul Sunday to all of you!

It’s a beautiful sunny day here in Rhode Island. But no matter where in the world you are, it’s a beautiful day to reset, renew, and restore for the week ahead.

Who has started Spring Cleaning already? Me too! It’s unbelievable how many material things we accumulate. I moved a year ago and had the opportunity to get rid of all the crap I didn’t need. So I find it astounding that only 1 year later, here I am with the same problem.

The funny part is that when we’re buying all this “stuff” we totally 100% believe that we need this item or really want that thing. But the truth is the need or want are really just masks and lies.

You will always get everything that you need. Sometimes no more than that, but always enough. How do I know that? Well, tell me a time when you didn’t have all that you really needed to survive. Please, do tell me in the comments below if you’ve been through a time like that.

We get stuck in the mask of “I need this” or “if I only had that…I’d be happy. Or “…I’d be fulfilled.” Or “…I’d be [fill in the blank with your core desired feeling].” But these are only lies we tell ourselves.

What we need to be happy will never come from the Apple store or Nordstroms. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But it’s true.

We have to consciously and actively create and pursue happiness in and by way of ourselves. You have to be aware of your life aim. You have to make goals. You have to take chances and move towards your fears. You have to go outside of your comfort zone, and you have to go inside of your heart to find out what you really need.

Today I took to time to nourish my body with exercise, my my mind with organization and cleaning, and my spirit with laughter and friends. This made me so much happier than buying new shoes!

Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself! Clearly your old methods of trying to obtain happiness and fulfillment aren’t working. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading this blog!

Make today and every Sunday a place to get rid of what’s not serving you and make space for nourishment, restoration, and something new in your life. Create your best self in the process.

Are You a Hater?

Image

Ever find yourself making this face? Yeah, not so pretty is it?! It’s like you have to put actual, conscious effort into making this face. That means sending disdain and negativity into your body in order to make this expression!

What? Why?! Sounds terrible, right?

So why do we sometimes create negativity from within ourselves and send it outwards into the world via this nasty face?

– You don’t like someone.

– Something is not working out in your favor.

– You see someone as the competition.

On the surface you may say, “yeah, I can see myself hating on someone for those reasons.” In that case, I challenge you to take a deeper look at why you are hating…

– Are you jealous? Probably! Find out why.

– Are you reflecting on your own weaknesses when you see someone else excelling?

– Do you secretly feel everything should work out for you? Why? What makes you so special?

Don’t hate, appreciate.

How can you turn that awful face and self-created hate into positive appreciation for the person or thing?

– See the person as a blessing that’s pushing you to be better (the competition trigger).

– Understand your jealousy towards someone, and instead, use that energy to work on improving yourself versus beating others down (the “don’t like” trigger).

– See how this situation can be a learning experience and benefit you down the road (the “not in my favor” trigger).

Ever caught yourself making this face or creating the hate? Tell us about it! What did you do to correct it ? Share your comments below!

Be your best self today,

Brittany

Want your life Photoshopped?

So often we run around wishing things were different about our lives, and our selves. What if you could change that?

In this video, 4 women received professional makeup, styling, and photography to make them look like “Cover Girls.” Every woman’s dream, right? Well, their reactions may surprise you.

Not only did these women feel that they didn’t recognize themselves, they had overall negative reactions to being so drastically photoshopped. They even said, “I don’t even know that person.”

How do you project this is your own life? Do you wish you looked like someone else? Had someone else’s career? Someone’s life? That would fix everything! Right?!

Wrong. Don’t ask to look like someone else. Or be someone else. Be yourself. Be your best self.
